Zera food recycler with the lid open to add scraps

By Erin Marissa Russell

Are you curious what happened to the Zera Food Recycler? We’ll get you up to date in this article.

Now discontinued, the Zera Food Recycler was a product of the Whirlpool Corporation. The Food Recycler was able to turn a week’s worth of food scraps into fertilizer for the garden in just 24 hours. The company took preorders on Indiegogo for the Food Recycler. In this fashion, the project was crowdfunded through the site.

People who reviewed the Zera Food Recycler said that while it shredded and prepared the food scraps for use in the garden, of course the scraps did not have time to decompose. When used in the garden, they could create unpleasant smells and continue the process of decay.

Some reviewers stated that the Zera Food Recycler was a good way to prepare kitchen scraps before adding them to a compost heap. Because the Zera Food Recycler broke the scraps down into smaller pieces, they did not take as long to decompose into compost as untreated food scraps.

Although the website says the Zera Food Recycler is “sold out,” it is actually a discontinued product. If you are interested in purchasing a Zera Food Recycler, you should check secondhand markets such as eBay or Craigslist.

Now you know what happened to the Zera Food Recycler, as well as a little about how the product works and how it has been reviewed. If you decide to purchase one secondhand, be aware that although the food is broken down into smaller pieces by the Zera Food Recycler, you may wish to add it to a compost heap instead of placing the prepared food scraps directly in your garden.
