Start Your Summer Garden in January with Winter Sowing

Want to get your summer garden started early? How about December or January?

You don’t need grow lights, shelving, heated seed mats, or even space indoors. You don’t need an expensive greenhouse either.

All you need is some milk jugs!

It’s a system that’s so straightforward, cheap and easy that anyone can do it.

There’s a great introduction at the blog A Garden for the House called Winter Sowing 101, and a terrific follow up post about which plants are best for winter sowing, and when to plant them. The blog also gives instructions on how to make the milk jug mini-greenhouses that make the whole thing work, and credits the site Wintersown.org as the inventor of the process.

Anyone ever tried it? Leave a comment and let us know.
