grow clover with cabbage as a companion

White Clover Fall Cover Crop for Cabbage

The trick is to plant thick beds of white clover in the fall in those areas you want to plant with cabbages in the spring. When springtime rolls around, plow under strips of the clover and cultivate cabbage in the strips. The clover serves two purposes: within the cultivated strips, it acts as a green manure that enriches the soil; and the flowering clover in between the cultivated strips attracts beneficial insects, like lacewings and ladybugs, that will eat the cabbageworms.
